Sometimes athletes-in-training wear weighted vests to improve their performance.  When one removes the 20-pound vest, a runner can go farther and faster without the additional weight.  And so it goes when an obese person remove 25 pounds, 50 pounds, 100 pounds, or 150 pounds from their frame.  Energy and mobility after bariatric surgery increase steadily and significantly.

At 0-3 months post-op, patients already report improvements in their mobility & energy:
Gastric Bypass/41/Female:  “My join pain is so much better, I’m able to play with my 3-year-old son now.”

Gastric Bypass/39/Female:  “I have more energy.  I wake up each day able to move better.”

Sleeve/36/Male:  “I’m walking faster, a lot faster.”

Lap Band/33/Female:  “I can exercise now.  I run!”

Post-op patients, 3-6 months report:
Sleeve/63/Female:  “I have more energy and flexibility.  I want to move all the time now instead of just sit!”

Gastric Bypass/54/Female:  “I can touch my toes and do 40 minutes on the elliptical.  I can stand longer and walk farther.”

Sleeve/46/Male:  “I have more energy and more endurance for exercise.”

Sleeve/49/Female:  “I have so much more energy and my feet don’t hurt anymore.”

Gastric Bypass/47/Male:  “I’ve started playing basketball with coworkers again.  I go to the gym now.”

By the time patients reach 6-12 months post-op:
Gastric Bypass/55/Male:  “I am no longer hiring people to do things around my house.  I can do it all myself.”

Sleeve/44/Male:  “I haven’t had this much energy since I was 20 years old.”

Lap Band/49/Female:  “I have greater mobility, less muscle aches, and I sleep better.”

Gastric Bypass/52/Female:  “I can walk 2 miles in 30 minutes.  I have tons of energy and I sleep better at night.”

Sleeve/45/Male:  “I hadn’t realized how much my weight was holding me back.  Now my energy is through the roof.”

After 12 months post-op, patients are doing some pretty incredible things and feeling confident:
Gastric Bypass/41/Female:  “I am very active now.  I work with a trainer 3 times each week.  I am training for my second 10K!”

Gastric Bypass/44/Male:  “I’m making up for time wasted.  I’m coaching my son’s soccer team and keeping up with the kids.”

Sleeve/37/Female:  “I actually enjoy walking long distances, on the beach and at the mall.”

Gastric Bypass/47/Female:  “My life has changed or the better.  I have more energy and I look forward to going to the gym every day, something I never thought I would love.”

Sleeve/36/Female:  “My energy level is through the roof!  Anything I want to do now is within my reach!”
