Thank you Rick and Roberta for sharing your weight loss surgery journeys.
“I grew up in Seattle playing baseball, camping with the Boy Scouts, and running around the neighborhood with my friends. When I was 13, my family moved to southern California. I missed Seattle and my friends. I stopped playing sports and became sedentary. This is when my issues with weight began.
Fast-forward forty years. My wife Roberta and I were living in Lancaster, but not doing much more than working and relaxing at home. Gone were the days when we enjoyed camping, hiking, tennis and bowling. We were both suffering from type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and my knees were deteriorating from years of obesity. We tried numerous diets together; Weight Watchers, Nutri-System, Cambridge, liquid & low calories diets. We would lose between 20-30 pounds with each one but we could never maintain it. Not only did we regain our 20-30 pounds, we usually added on even more. Our weight issues did not go unnoticed by our physicians, but the diets and exercises they prescribed did not work any better than those we tried on our own.
Early in 2012, I started to research weight loss surgery. I began talking about it at work and learned that several coworkers were weight loss surgery patients. They shared their experiences and encouraged me to pursue it. By this time I was on multiple medications and felt like my life was winding down. I deserved better.
When I met with Dr. Yadegar I appreciated his knowledge and the amount of time he spent patiently explaining the weight loss surgery procedures. I decided the sleeve gastrectomy was the best option for me and began preparation for surgery. Once I made the decision, I knew it would change the rest of my life for the better. Weight loss surgery would give me more time to live.
I had my surgery in August, 2012 and everything went well. I had some discomfort, but the staff at Palmdale Regional Medical Center took great care of me. I returned to work after two weeks and was grateful to have the incredible support of my WLS-coworkers.
As my medical conditions improved over the next few months, my wife was very happy for me. But Roberta suffered with many of the same diesease and decided she wanted to improve her health too. She met with Dr. Yadegar and in June, 2013, she had the Sleeve Gastrectomy.
I am off ALL medications now. ALL of my medical conditions are resolved. I never dreamed I would live without the worry and stress of taking multiple pills. Roberta’s conditions are improving and she is taking less medication. Our coworkers, friends, and family continue to encourage and support us in this lifelong journey.
Roberta and I are no longer spending our free time on the couch. We enjoy taking walks and going to the gym together to workout on the treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals. We agree that our healthier lives have led to increased self-confidence and a better outlook for our futures. I’ve learned a lot through this process and believe I know what my body needs to stay healthy. Along this journey, Roberta and I are spreading the word that WLS can help people reclaim their health and start living again. We have several friends now going through the program with Dr. Yadegar and we’re supporting them through their journeys.
I went home to Seattle recently to visit the old neighborhood and see family and friends. While it was a great vacation and I enjoyed my time with everyone, it’s possible the highlight of my trip was fastening the seatbelt on the plane. It was the first time in twenty years I was able to fly without a seatbelt extender. Roberta and I are looking forward to traveling more and really enjoying ourselves. I feel like everything has opened up for us. There isn’t anything we can’t do!”
